Special Student Guest

Once each fall season and once or twice each winter/spring season, we have an on-air drawing to find the Special Student Guests for Math Mentor. These drawings usually are once a week for a month, which can be up to five drawings in a month.

To be eligible for this drawing, you must meet the following requirements:

  1. be a student in grades kindergarten through twelfth grade
  2. have called us to ask a math question in the past or current season
  3. left us your correct first name, phone number, school and teacher's name
What happens for the drawing?

On the day we have the drawing, Math Mentors draw 5 names out of a basket live, on the air. The producer of the tv show then takes these names and calls each student, in the order his or her name was drawn out of the basket.

If the student is at home when the producer calls, watching Math Mentor, and has her/his parent agree to bring the student to our studio on the required date, then that student is announced to be the winner of our drawing.

If the student is not at home, or cannot reach his/her parent to get permission and a ride to our studio, then that student is not chosen, and the next student’s phone number is called.

If all 5 names that were drawn either cannot be reached or cannot come to the studio, then another 5 names are drawn from the basket and the process starts again.

Who can come to the studio and what happens?

Each Special Student Guest can bring his/her entire family, one friend, AND her/his math teacher to our television studio.

The tour takes one hour. During that time, we take you, your family members, friend, and math teacher on a tour of the math resources that are available to you. First we introduce the resources on the website. Then we show you parts of the Math Mentor television show, the Math Squares Tournament, and an example of other Special Student Guests Using the Math on the air.

On the studio tour, we show you the phone room, the math mentor statistics station, the fish bowl, the edit suite, the control room, and the studio.

The family, friend, and math teacher watch in the control room as the Special Student Guest goes into the studio, gets hooked up to a microphone , sits on the Math Mentor set with your favorite Math Mentor. You can practice setting up and solving a math question, then you solve a math problem step-by-step.
Your math teacher then goes into the studio and onto the Math Mentor set and is interviewed by one of the Math Mentors.

These segments are then edited, and will play on the air within the next two weeks.

Some of these segments will also appear here on our website!
