KAISER PERMANENTE PRIVACY BREACH
Kaiser Permanente recently experienced a privacy breach and some of the employees may have been affected. If members have questions, please contact the Kaiser Permanente member service phone number on the back of your ID card.
What Happened?
On October 25, 2023, Kaiser Permanente determined that certain online technologies (also referred to as web technologies, pixels, or tracking technologies) installed on their websites and mobile applications may have transmitted personal information to their third-party online technology vendors Google, Microsoft Bing, and X (Twitter) when members and patients accessed their websites or mobile applications. This incident did not result from a cybersecurity attack or incident. Kaiser offers their sincerest apology that this incident occurred.
What Information was Involved?
The information that may have been involved was limited to: IP address, name, information that could indicate you were signed into a Kaiser Permanente account or service, information showing how you interacted with and navigated through theirwebsite or mobile applications, and search terms used in the health encyclopedia.
Detailed information concerning Kaiser Permanente account credentials (username and password), Social Security numbers, financial account information and credit card numbers were not included in the information.
What Kaiser is Doing:
They conducted a voluntary internal investigation into the use of these online technologies, and subsequently removed these online technologies from their websites and mobile applications. In addition, Kaiser Permanente has implemented additional measures with the guidance of experts designed to safeguard against the recurrence of this incident. They are collecting historical data and performing data analyses to determine which members and patients may have been affected by the use of these few online technologies. Once that process is completed, they will notify affected members/patients with individual notices sent via email or first-class mail (if a member/patient has opted out of receiving paperless notices). They are also notifying regulators in accordance with HIPAA and state health care breach regulations.
